Carlton Reid
Carlton Reid has been writing about bicycles for 20 years. He's a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers and the Outdoor Writers Guild.
Reid was the founder (1997), co-owner and editor/publisher of On Your Bike magazine, a general interest full-colour quarterly magazine sold to EMAP Active of Peterborough in December 1999. EMAP produced an MTB version of this magazine before it subsequently ceased publication in 2000.
Reid is author of 'Adventure Mountain Biking' (Crowood Press, 1990); 'Complete Book of Cycling' (contributor, Hamlyn 1997); 'I-Spy Bicycles' (Michelin 1998); 'Discover Israel' (Berlitz 1998); 'Lebanon: A Travel Guide' (Kindlife 1995, Pelican USA 1999); 'Classic Mountain Bike Routes of the World' (contributor, Quarto Publishing, 2000).
He was the co-manager of the first ever British mountain bike team. This team competed in the World Championships in Avoriaz, France, in 1987.
Reid has travelled widely by bicycle, usually solo, sometimes with Gil Bor, an Israeli mathematician.
Reid spent two years cycling - alone - through Europe and the Middle East (Israel, Syria, Jordan, Egypt) before starting at Newcastle University in 1986. His trips have included: Sahara desert (1987); Death Valley, USA (1990); Sonara desert, Mexico (1993); Malawi (1994); Lebanon (1995); and Iceland (1995).
He is married to Judith, a hospital doctor, and they have three children (6, 8 and 6), all of whom cycle to school. On a family cycling holiday, all three children were able to cycle from Scotland to home in Newcastle in just two days.)
