Bicycle Recycling has opened its third shop at HMS Nelson within Portsmouth’s Naval Base, repairing and selling bikes to members of HM forces as well as the many thousands of civilian workers employed within the base.

The Naval Base Cycle Hub, which opened in early April, followed a number of successful Bike Doctor events held within the base in the last few years from Bicycle Recycling.

Bicycle Recycling sells refurbished bikes fully serviced with a 90-day warranty and offers maintenance courses to customers. Set up in 2010 by keen cyclist Guy Partleton, Bicycle Recycling teamed up with Charlie Adie in 2012 - another keen rider and chief exec of youth charity Motiv8, who wanted to establish a social enterprise that could provide training and sustainable jobs for young people. In October 2012 Bicycle Recycling opened its first shop by Gosport Bus Station and Ferry, with the second shop opening in February 2014 at the Community Cycle Hub in Portsmouth. Bicycle Recycling is a trading subsidiary wholly owned by Motiv8 South.

The company employs qualified mechanics who work alongside apprentices, trainees and volunteers; with more than half the paid staff being young people.

The firm said: “We provide work experience opportunities for school age young people, those who have been long term unemployed, as well as community service opportunities that benefit others. All profits from Bicycle Recycling go direct to charity to provide further life chances for young people. We are a social enterprise, a business that aspires to deliver excellence whilst maintaining a clear social mission that believes in the power of people.”

“Already I will be having a young person to help me one day per week as part of a training scheme run in partnership with a local college."
