London 2012 sparks Fixed Gear sales Frenzy

Retailer reports sales rise during the Olympic period

The London 2012 effect (closely related to the 'Wiggo effect') has boosted sales for online cycle retailer Fixed Gear Frenzy.

Sales from Friday July 27th to August 12th soared 138 per cent compared to the 17 days prior to the opening ceremony, the retailer told BikeBiz.

Established in September 2009, the Cardiff-based retailer sells online only and put its recent success down to the recent successes of British cycling and the Olympics - particularly on the track. Other factors behind the surge have been the increasing popularity of single speed bikes and their becoming more affordable. The retailer has built up a following over time, too, said owner Michael Tarr.

Tarr added: "I can only see things getting better for the cycling industry. The success of British cycling and the Olympics will encourage more people to ride bikes so the launch of our new general online bike shop CyclesDirect.net is perfect timing. We are welcoming brands/distributors to get in touch with us as we seek to grow our product range."
