bikebizIndustry awards event set for autumn

New cycle trade awards announced

Intent Media, publisher of BikeBiz, is launching a new event that recognises retail and manufacturing excellence within the modern UK cycle industry.

The BikeBiz Awards 2008 will run alongside this year's Cycle Show, in London, taking place on the evening of the trade specific day of Thursday October 9th. The venue of the event will be announced next month.

"A trade awards event for such a vibrant business as the cycle industry is long overdue and will offer an enjoyable and valuable evening for the entire cycle business community - from the smallest independent dealer to large suppliers," said BikeBiz publisher and Intent Media managing director Stuart Dinsey.

"The BikeBiz brand is respected both in print and online. We have a strong relationship with our readers and will work closely with the industry to create an event it can be proud of.

"Intent Media already runs high quality awards in other entertainment and leisure markets and we will be bringing our experience and production values to the BikeBiz Awards."

Categories will be announced next month. The awards will have a transparent voting procedure, with the BikeBiz team picking five Finalists per category after a free-of-charge lobbying period.

A wide Judging Panel, drawn from all sectors of the business, will then choose the winners.

"This is an event for everyone. It will be affordable and prestigious, with huge reach thanks to the influence of the BikeBiz magazine and website," added Dinsey.

An excellent idea. When will you be publishing the details of categories? Will they be for retailers or suppliers, or both? Can you publish details of the Cycle Show and refer me to material from last year's Show for me to see how you do it. My ignorance relates to my living in the Land of OZ (Milk and Honey, long bike rides and good coffee).

Wow - wasn't really expecting this. Or am I just out of the loop? Either way, great news for the industry. Best of luck with it all.

“An awards event for everyone...”
Posted by: Stuart Dinsey - Apr 3, 12:36pm

Hi all - I'm the publisher of BikeBiz.
Just wanted to reiterate that these are the first ever high quality pan-industry awards - they will be inclusive of all sectors, with a big focus on retailers. Every single key buyer, from IBD to large chain, will be in the room.
Categories and venue will be announced shortly.
There will also be a free lobbying system which allows readers to put themselves forward for consideration, or indeed sing the praises of suppliers and customers.
BikeBiz will then announce five Finalists per award category and a wide-ranging panel of industry judges from all sectors will choose the winners - not us!
It's all transparent and we really hope the industry at large will participate.
The UK industry desperately needs a quality awards event and should celebrate its successes and achievements. We're very excited about putting this together.
You have all been so supportive of BikeBiz in print and online we reckon it's time we got you all in the same room together. It's be a great night.
We're not selling tickets or tables just yet, but we are talking to potential sponsors.
Anyone who wants to know more about the event can contact me directly via the BikeBiz team or by contacting Intent Media directly.
Thank you in advance for all your support.

Is there a category for most ads on one web page?

“'Most Ads On One Web Page Award'...”
Posted by: Stuart Dinsey - Apr 3, 9:19pm

Dear Northy
BikeBiz is a free print publication for the trade and a free online resource which we continue to invest in. We have taken a very long term view, because we totally believe in this marketplace and share a passion for it.
Intent Media effectively saved BikeBiz from closure when it took the brand over two years ago - we relaunched the mag, increased its circulation, gave Carlton some much needed extra resource and ensured that it came out every month, bang on time.
We have also re-designed the website twice and continue to add in features and grow our readership amongst professionals all around the world who are interested in the cycling industry.
Companies in the cycling business don't have a lot of money, but the vast majority do try to support BikeBiz where they can because they value the service we provide to the community, be it through news, opinion, the online forum or otherwise.
So that means lots of ads, sold at affordable prices (yes really).
Apologies if that offends you, but it's the economics of trade publishing. Especially when the mag is free, the website is free and we want to continue investing and raising the bar.
Everyone is entitled to their view though and we will of course take your criticism on board.
If we increase our ad rates, perhaps we could run fewer of them...
All the very best & thanks for participating in the debate. It's what we're all about.

Sounds very high profile, i think the idea of a free lobbying system is a great one and having a wide-range of panel judges from different sectors means that all voting will be fair.
Look forward to hearing more on this.
