World's most famous bike mechanic passes away
Sheldon Brown died last night of a massive heart attack.
New was carried on the website of Harris Cyclery of the US, where he had worked.
His bike tech pages on the shop website are some of the bike world's most visited pages, linked from thousands of websites.
He was also noted for his April Fool spoofs. Who could ever forget the Real Man Saddle, made from granite?

Sad sad news. Sheldon had a tremendous impact on a lot of people with his willingness to give his time to all comers.

I'm terribly sad to hear that Sheldon passed. His online technical info made a lot of hard-to-find information freely available, and he would graciously help newbie bicycle enthusiasts like me when we emailed with a question.

He'll be missed.
I can't think how many times I've referred to his pages on the Harris Cyclery Website. When I've mailed questions, as another poster has commented, he was unfailingly thoughtful & thorough in his responses.
Cycling has lost a valuable ambassador & advocate.

Very sad news indeed. Checking his website out for support to the old grey matter on all things cycling was a kin to having almost a direct line to God and the meaning of life. Inspirational and a true expert in life, cycling and doing what you love. He will be and already is missed by all who have used his cycling knowledge, but I'm sure he will live on in spirit to legend proportions. Thanks for all you help Sheldon...

Although we knew he was Ill that's shocking news. A paragon among bike mechanics, I'll miss his thoughtful comments and always accurate information.

A sad day - the man was a legend in web/cycling circles. May times, when flummoxed, tinkering with my stable of bikes, I've turned to Sheldon's wisdom when all else has failed. A great light in the cycling world has gone out. Ride on Sheldon.

What a great shame... his site and advice was like having the old master in the house next door.

There's a lot of sad cyclists in the world today. I've had virtually no contact with him (a couple of email replies and a few posts to the aus.bicycle usenet group) but even from that small contact I feel the loss of someone special. Here's thinking of his family and close friends.

Very sad news - who is going to be the ultimate arbiter of technical arguments now? I never met, or even talked to Sheldon, but I used his website often - he will be sorely missed by the cycling world...

Sheldon's usefulness will survive him. What a blessing to have the pages Sheldon leaves behind!

While appreciating Sheldon as another "older fellow who still rides a bike in daily life", I actually knew Sheldon from other cyclical events- drama and music- where he was a skilled performer, avid singer and raconteur. In this rarified academic community, he was amongst the few who could exhibit immense intellect without "attitude". He was a voracious reader in many areas of literature and a fine person.

No way! The guy was a genius. I built my single speed with a head full of his equations and advice. When I think about quitting my career and opening an LBS, I think I want to be like Sheldon.
Damn shame.
My new homebuilt SS w/belt drive will be in his memory.

I've accessed his intenet content many times during my service in cycle trade, thanks and ride in peace. Thoughts with his family and friends.

The man was and will remain a legend! There must be thousands of enthusiasts, like myself, that have found his articles helpful, informative and funny. A sad loss to his family and the whole cycling community.

Sheldon's site helped get me back into cycling after two decades away and is an incredible resource for the world. What a fantastic, talented, funny and unique guy. I never could find one of those granite saddles he recommended. Thoughts are with family and friends.

Condolences to his family. His web site is a source of knowledge and inspiration when searching for the answers to obscure questions that nobody else seemed to know the answers to.

Looking ahead now...who is going to keep up Shelon's work ? It struck me, that apart from a link to memorials, his website looks very much like he is still alive, like the button "send e-mail". Where will such messages go ? Who will update the web site with the same competence ? Someone at Harris Cyclery ?
