Starting in July, Mavic will run its own distribution
Mavic has announced that it will launch a direct to retail service for the UK beginning in July 2008 for the 2009 season of product sales.
Mavic’s UK distribution service will focus on the complete Mavic hard and soft goods line, and will present retailers with a ‘Premium Mavic’ concept allowing key retailers to present, promote, stock and sell the complete Mavic product range.
Mavic is a service focused company and will concentrate on retailer training, creating a network that is able to maintain and support the technology based Mavic hard and soft goods ranges, further benefiting the customer and retailer. As a manufacturer the company will also be able to provide improved deliveries and availability further benefiting customers and retailers.
All Mavic products will be supported by the already established Mavic Service Centre in Surrey.
Chicken Cycle-Kit will continue to stock and supply Mavic products until the end of the 2008 range.
Mavic UK and the Mavic Service Centre will be based in Frimley, Surrey at Amer Sports UK new head quarters.
Further information will be made available in June, in the mean time any questions should be directed to Alex Coventry.

So, we'll be seeing a drop in the trade and retail price then as they won't need to factor in a distributer margin in?
I doubt it....

Is this a sign of things to come? I wonder if this will start a trend? We will see.

Is it common for manufacturers in UK (Europe) to distribute direct to bike shops? If so, is this indicative of any changes in the retail market? eg big box retailers making an impact at the expence of small retailers?

Sorry. Slight slip of the finger... expense rather than expence. Sorry about that. Accusracy is everything.

It would seem slightly naïve to think that going direct doesn't involve costs for the manufacturer. If Mavic is intelligent and forward thinking, they will invest some of their gain in margin in staff training and customer service. As for this being a trend, as soon as any brand reaches critical mass in a market it will want to go direct. It offers a number of advantages: it's the only way to ensure that your brand is represented 100% in the way that you desire; it ensure that technical information gets to the retailers in an unfiltered way; is beneficial in fighting against grey marketing and will (or should) lead to a more profitable business...

Green Oil UK Limited goes straight to the shops. Its easier for UK companies to do this. Some medium sized bike shops complain about the 'extra paper work' of not buying products in through their usual distributer, but this is little more than writing a separate extra cheque.
If you're a UK company, or a multinational with a UK office like Mavic, distributers can be an unecessary middle man.

with gas prices people will buy more and more on the internet. The US should see a serge on on-line buying and another decline w/ small shops who can't compete with the big box buying power
