10,000 spectators watch Nissan-sponsored Freeride event

The Qashqai Urban Challenge kicked off on Saturday in Newcastle upon Tyne. Nissan constructed a massive Northshore area in the centre of town for the pan-European competition with a purse of 200,000 Euros. Star rider Aaron Chase was rushed to hospital following a ramp crash but the riding went on...

The Urban Freeride event in Newcastle upon Tyne is the first in a series of five events. After Newcastle, the series travels to Milan, Madrid, Paris, and Cologne.

The Nissan microsite will have some great footage online soon. In the meantime, there's a five-minute YouTube video of the two-day event. The video also features an interview with Darren Berrecloth, winner of the event.

Nissan paid big bucks for a outdoor broadcast company to video what Nissan is billing as "first international Pan-European Urban Freeride Competition with the largest prize fund to date."

US rider Aaron Chase was taken to hospital on the first day of the two-day event after falling badly during a Northshore ramp jump.

Chase compressed his spine and chipped his L1 vertebrae.

On Sunday, Specialized/Race Face rider Darren 'Bearclaww' Berrecloth won the event after a 360 out of the satellite dish and 360-table on the last jump. He pocketed 8000 Euros and told BikeBiz.com afterwards he's going to buy a boat with his winnings.
