French retailer set to increase reach, according to speculation
Sports retail chain Decathlon, owned by the Oxylane Group, is planning expansion into North America, according to this BikeEurope report.
The retailer has bought a 40,000 sq ft site in Ontario, California for a superstore and logistics hub, according to reports.
If true, the move will mark Oxylane Group's second on North America. In 1999 the Group acquired the MVP Sports 20-strong chain. Despite ambitious plans to increase store numbers to 200, the shop tally actually reduced to four in 2006. Oxylane pulled out of North America in 2006, citing local competition as a key reason behing the withdrawal.
While Decathlon currently has eight UK stores, the retailer is a European retail heavyweight, with 243 stores in France, 76 in Spain and 59 in Italy. Decathlon's reach extends to China (23 stores), Russia (six stores) and Brazil (nine stores).
The firm expanded into Northern Ireland with a 40,000 sq ft store earlier this year.
