Yorkshire rider secures victory

Russell Downing won the Tour of Ireland yesterday (Sunday August 23rd) after finishing behind Norwegian Lars Petter Nordhaug at the final stage in Cork.

Downing crossed the line second at St Patrick’s Hill after a stage that saw the race organisers shorten the race by cancelling the final lap due to torrential rain on Sunday.

Downing took overall victory in the general classification, while Lance Armstrong and Mark Cavendish both retired before the finish.

According to the race organisers: "Downing was the convincing race winner in a display of aggressive riding and strength.

"Brave Nordhaug was a worthy stage winner as the only rider to be able to hold onto Downing’s wheel as he selected to attack the field who had been taking pot shots at him by attacking all around the tough Cork circuit."
