Recumbent wins commuter bike design comp

The 'ThisWay' concept bike has won the BicycleDesign competition to find a bike to appeal to new bicycle commuters

Last year, James Thomas' Bicycle Design blog of the US called for entries into a competition to find a new style of bike to get newbies cycling to work.

The winner is Torkel Dohmer’ with his 'ThisWay' semi-recumbent. He wins a Cannondale Bad Boy 700.

The competition judges were:

Torgny Fjeldskaar
Director of Industrial Design & Advanced Products Division at Cannondale Bicycle Corporation.

Mark Sanders
Principal of MAS Design Products Ltd and designer of the Strida and IF Bikes.

Senior Industrial Designer, Smart Design/ Femme Den, NYC

Carlton Reid
Executive editor of BikeBiz.

The judges were divided over the shortlisted bikes in the competition, arguing over design and manufacturing restraints as well as the commercial possibilities of the finalists.
