Malcolm Shepherd was a victim of 'white van man', was hospitalised and could be off work for up to two months.
Sustrans CEO Malcolm Shepherd was knocked from his bike by a van in Bristol.
He has a smashed knee, cracked skull and a broken hand. It's unlikely he will be back at work until the summer.

Which begs the question - was he wearing a helmet?

0 0"was he wearing a helmet" Who cares? Was the driver of the van wearing a helmet?

0 0No Jamie, but the driver didn't sustain head injuries. My point wasn't to exonarate the driver from blame (we all agree that they have little regard for cyclists)- it was to ascertain whether Malcolm was wearing a helmet and if not why, when his head injuries could've been reduced or avoided. Someone with his high profile should be setting a better example-I definately wouldn't ride amongst traffic without a helmet...would you?

0 0Matt, the poor bloke was knocked off by a van and has been badly hurt, and your only comment is to complain about the fact he wasn't wearing enough safety gear? For what it's worth, cycle helmets aren't (and never have been) designed to protect cyclists from accidents with vehicles. That's fact. It's not just ignorant, it's dangerously misleading to suggest otherwise. And in this context I think it's appalling bad taste to complain about what "example" he should be setting. He was just out lawfully riding his bike and now he's smashed up in hospital.

0 0Hell - we don't even know if he was wearing a helmet or not, and already you're complaining about it. Beggars belief...

0 0Jamie I wasn't complaining - just pointing out something. Yes cycle helmets aren't designed to protect cyclists from vehicle collisions - but they do protect your head from concrete etc... I really feel for Malcolm as no cyclist deserves to suffer any injury (especially from traffic). I also didn't mean to offend anyone. Please accept my apologies.
