The fashion designer says the bike can be given away with social housing

The bike is called the 'Road Runner' and will be launched within the next few months.

Hemingway is a patron of Sustrans and a committed cycle commuter. He was one half of the design partnership which created the iconic 1980s Red or Dead fashion label.

On Wednesday he launched a cycling pool at the Staiths South Bank housing development in Gateshead. Background on the Cycle@Staiths launch here and there's a YouTube video, too (no pix of the bike yet).

Hemingway's design company helped to personalise this riverside housing development. There's a cycle route in front of the development. This goes to Newcastle city centre along a flat riverside route. It's blocked in the other direction but eventually there will be a cycle route to Europe's largest mall, the MetroCentre.

Cycle@Staiths is a pool of ten bikes for residents’ use. The bikes are free to use. Every household has also been supplied with a £57.50 Halfords voucher to spend on bike kit.

Hemingway's new £100 folding bike could be given away to residents of similar housing developments, believes the designer. Hemingway has also designed a new bike shed for domestic use. Shack Up is lower than a garden shed, can hold four bikes and there's a compartment for garden equipment or bike stuff. It will be available soon - in flat-pack form - from B&Q.
