The third UK Handmade Bicycle Show – Bespoked Bristol – will see over 80 exhibitors including those from the UK’s cycling heritage as well as the equivalents from overseas, as well as a new generation of bespoke frame builders.
Exhibition space is sold out for Bespoked, which runs Friday April 12th to 14th at Brunel’s Old Station, Bristol Temple Meads. According to the organiser, the rising interest in cycling in the UK has led to a resurgent custom-made bicycle industry.
This year’s show celebrates the 100-year anniversary of stainless steel, with a display of stainless steel bicycles taking up the reception area.
Following the success of the first year’s show, it moved to a larger venue last year – the iconic original railway terminal built by Brunel at Bristol Temple Meads. Over 4,000 visitors came to the 2012 show to see its 70 exhibitors.
Organiser Phil Taylor is a bicycle maker himself, with Libertine Bicycles, operating out of a small workshop in the Slad Valley, Gloucestershire. He explained: "I’d become interested in building a bicycle for myself, using the traditional techniques and materials of the classic British early 20th Century bikes. But I could find neither the information nor even the existing builders, as the culture was for small builders to work away quietly and modestly in their own areas.
"For the 2013 show we think that ‘actions speak louder than words, so we are going to build a bike from scratch, which will be made to fit one very lucky person. From the initial consultation and bike fit through tube selection, frame design, lug prep and carving, brazing, making forks and stems, checking alignment, choice of components and wheel building, some of the finest framebuilders and bike fitters in the world will be combining skills in this event."
