The winners are the Institut für Verkehrspedagogik (Institute for Transport Education) in Graz, Austria, and the Rowley Regis and Tipton primary care trust of West Bromwich.
The Institut für Verkehrspedagogik developed a road-based bicycle training programme for children. Instead of waving through cones on a school playground, children on the programme practise riding their bikes in traffic with adult instructors.
The project started in 1994 and 10 000 Austrian children have been traffic-trained. With the cash from the Shimano Cycling Concept Award, 20 additional schools will be inducted into the scheme.
The Rowley Regis and Tipton primary care trust from West Bromwich plans to start an adult cycle education course. The Shimano cash will help in the training of 16 cycling instructors. These trainers will provide cycle training to patients that have been referred by their doctors for exercise, and will also be able to provide cycle-friendly advice to other organisations in the area, including schools.
The SCCA jury consists of three editors from cycling trade publications: Jack Oortwijn of Bike Europe, Carlton Reid of BikeBiz.com and Michael Bollschweiler of Radmarkt. The jury chairman is Frank Peiffer, commercial director of Shimano Europe.
