Barbados to hold inaugural Festival Of Cycling this September

Barbados has announced that it will host the inaugural Festival of Cycling this Autumn as part of the 2017 Year of Sports.

The five-day event – which is taking place from September 4th to the 9th – has been designed for cyclists of all abilities to discover Barbados from a cycling perspective. The first four days will offer visitors the opportunity to get to know the various parishes of Barbados on both road and mountain bikes.

“At long last, we are proud to show off the island’s superb cycling routes,” said Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc UK director Cheryl Carter. “We have a thriving road cycling and mountain biking community here on Barbados with stunning MTB trails, especially along the east coast of the island.”

The round-the-island main road sportive will be held on the final day. It will offer cyclists the opportunity to sign up to one of two ‘round the island’ courses.

Advanced riders will attempt the 112km gold course, which sits on the coastal route of the island and less confident riders will be encouraged to ride the 64km silver course.

The gold course will start in Bridgetown and will take competitors anti-clockwise around the perimeter of the whole island. It will expose cyclists to coastal views of Cattlewash, the greenery of St John’s parish, and the small towns and villages along the coast and inland.
