The Triplettess de Belleville, the French-Canadian feature-length animation 'starring' Champion, a rider in a stylised Tour de France from the 1950s, is up for two Oscars this coming Sunday and was expected to scoop the top spot in last Saturday's César awards, the French Oscars. However, Canadian filmmaker Denys Arcand's The Barbarian Invasions stole the show, winning best film, best director and best original screenplay. Belleville Rendezvous, as the Triplettes de Belleville is known in the UK, did win something: best original music.
Belleville loved by the world, but snubbed by the French
The Barbarian Invasions is up for two Oscars on Sunday, best foreign film and best original screenplay.
Belleville is also up for two Oscars: best animated feature and best music.
Let’s face it, Belleville is unlikely to ever win a best screenplay award: the dialogue is minimal. Instead, the film is a visual delight and the accompanying score a tour de force, hence the ‘best original music’ César for Canadian Benoit Charest.
