River crossing route will link the 02 Arena and Excel

Bike friendly cable car approved for London ahead of 2012 Olympics

Transport for London have confirmed that a bike-friendly cablecar is to be built ahead of the 2012 Olympics, linking the key venues such as the 02 Arena and Excel.

The construction has been given the final clearance by the Greater London Authority and it is estimated the cablecar will be able to handle 2,500 people per hour. At its peak height, the cars will sail 164ft above the Thames.

Funding for the project, estimated to cost £40 million, has yet to be secured, but it is hoped construction will begin in early 2012.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said of the project: "With permissions signed and sealed we are now a significant step closer to being able to cruise the east London skyline via an elegant cable car spanning the mighty Thames."
