Bike Week 2013: Free bike check-ups, Breeze rides and film festivals

Samsung-sponsored Bike Week is now underway for 2013, with events taking place up and down the country, designed to encourage would-be cyclists to saddle up.

Running until June 23rd, Bike Week is the biggest mass participation cycling event in the UK. Last year almost half a million people took part in the celebrations.

This year’s event got underway with an MP Bike Ride starting in Hyde Park organised by the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group.

There are naturally far too many events taking place to list here (you can find a local event here) but here are a few that caught the eye:

    • Brompton Dock is challenging anyone organising a Bike Week event to use a Brompton for the week for £1.
    • Harpers Fitness is giving away free three-day passes for those who cycle to their local Harpers Fitness Sports Centre.
    • Bikeminded is running a free Bike Film Festival at the Coronet Cinema in Notting Hill tomorrow evening.
    • Toys R Us is running a ’20 per cent off bikes’ promo over the week.
    • Belhaven Bikes is running a number of offers to make the most of Bike Week too.
    • Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op is sponsoring a number of events over the week too. Details here.
    • Barclays is extending its free bike check programme to mark Bike Week, in Islington, Hackney (Goldsmith Row on Thursday 5pm-7.30pm) and Westminster (Langham Place, Friday 5-7pm).
    • Female-focused Breeze rides are taking place over Bike Week, including this one in Northwich.
    • Fisher’s folding bike brand Kansi is running a thoughtful Ride it Forward campaign over Bike Week. Based on the Catherine Hyde novel ‘Pay it forward’, where a good deed is repaid by passing the good deed on to somebody else – a kansi folding bike will go to someone nominated by their friend and that person will then choose the next nominee. Each individual will have the bike for two weeks and it will run until September. Here’s a video explaining the unusual concept:
