Last year’s event might have seen a whopping 18,000 cyclists enjoy riding on traffic-free streets in the second biggest city in the country, but this year there will be no Sky Ride for Birmingham, it has been revealed (by Birmingham Mail).
Citing difficulties in securing a date and route, Birmingham City Council said it is working with British Cycling to nail a route and date for 2015.
But the move has the potential to embarrass the City Council, which was awarded £17m by the government to boost cycling (from a £77m pot last summer).
In a statement on the Sky Ride site, the Council said: "This year we have had difficulties in securing a date and a suitable route so we have regrettably had to withdraw from the 2014 Sky Ride event. Our partnership with British Cycling is particularly important as cycling is one of our identified priority sports and we are working with them to establish a new route and date for the Sky Ride event in 2015.
"We are also committed to supporting Sky Ride Local rides which are guided by British Cycling Ride Leaders and Breeze rides for women. These are all free and are grouped in levels to suit everyone from beginners, including children, to experienced cyclists."
14 large scale Sky Ride events will be taking place over the summer.
