Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins won gold this afternoon at the London 2012 Olympics men’s time trials.
Wiggins was wearing his ‘aero’ arm wires during the race, which also saw Team GB’s Chris Froome grab bronze, while Germany’s Tony Martin took silver.
Back in Beijing in 2008 the crowds were kept away, but in London huge crowds lined virtually the entire route, which ran from and around Hampton Court Palace.
The win makes Wiggins the most decorated British Olympian of all-time, with seven medals (four golds, one silver and two bronze).
Chris Boardman, who was speaking to the BBC, said Wiggins was: "The greatest British cyclist of all time, I have no qualms about saying that."
Chris Hoy tweeted: "YESSSSSS!! Absolutely delighted for @bradwiggins and @chrisfroome. History made today."
Wiggins’ win marks a spectacular summer for the cycling world in Britain. Earlier this week Lizzie Armistead picked up silver in the women’s road race – also Britain’s first medal at London 2012. And of course Wiggins’ Tour de France win marked the first time a Brit had conquered the gruelling race.
Millions so far have already tuned into cycling events at the Olympics. And there’s still track, mountain bike and BMX to come during London 2012.
