As if the prospect of British cycling success at the Olympics on home soil wasn’t enough to stoke the interest of UK cyclists (and potential cyclists) – and hopefully get them spending at the tills of bike retailers up and down the land – Bradley Wiggins is going to win the Tour de France.
That’s according to the latest odds from Ladbrokes, anyway. Wiggins has just retained the Criterium du Dauphine – ahead of last year’s Le Tour winner Cadel Evans.
Wiggins has rejected the suggestion that he’s favourite to win the Tour de France, although he has admitted he is in his best shape ever to win it.
That Dauphine victory, coupled with Andy Schleck’s withdrawal from Le Tour, has seen Wiggins odds cut to 5/4 (from 6/4) to win this summer. Second favourite Cadel Evans has been trimmed to 5/2 (from 11/4), however it’s looking unlikely that Denis Menchov (16/1) and Vincenzo Nibali (20/1) will cause an upset.
"It’s a two-horse race between Wiggins and Evans but all the money’s for Wiggins," said Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes. "He’s lining up a double-pronged attack on this summer’s cycling and the odds suggest he’ll do the business in France and London."
