The rate of bike thefts in Bristol is twice that of the UK’s average city according to this report.
BBC News acquired statistics that show thefts are up by as much as 20 per cent for high value bicycles (above £1,000).
Police are combating bike thieves with CCTV covering theft hotspots, and also by encouraging owners to ‘chip’ their bikes. The chip is lodged inside the bike frame and can be used to identify the owner of the recovered bike.
Bristol was named as Britain’s first cycling city in June last year, and the city received £11 million from the government to encourage cycling uptake.
