Work is due to start soon on Bristol’s longest Dutch-style cycletrack. The work is due to commence on 10th March, the first step towards delivering the Avon Promenade, a continuous walking and cycling route that will extend from Keynsham to Hotwells and be free from motor traffic. The track will be ready to use by the summer.
The Clarence Road cycle track will provide a convenient, accessible, healthy and safe route from large residential areas to both the major transport interchanges and the developing Local Enterprise Zone, says a statement from Bristol city council.
The track will feature specially-designed ‘toby’ bollards to segregate the three-metre wide two-way track. The £380,000 project involves resurfacing, replacing a pedestrian crossing and the removal of pay and display parking meters.
Mayor of Bristol George Ferguson said:
“This scheme is exactly what we are going to see more of in Bristol as cycling and walking routes are improved so that anyone aged eight to 80 can feel that they have an option to travel in this way.
“We’ve used funds from the Sustainable Transport Fund and the Local Enterprise Zone as the first step towards making this part of Bristol a more accessible, safer and pleasant place to walk and cycle. I’ve seen this sort of cycle track used successfully in the Netherlands and in Copenhagen, this year’s European Green Capital and separation really works where roads are busy and we can find the room.
“New infrastructure such as this is backed up by wider measures such as cycle training, working with employers, the freight industry, police and Driving Standards Agency to help make cycling a more regular, normal and safer experience."
The scheme was subject to a six week local consultation. Further work to improve the junctions at either end will be achieved through Enterprise Zone and MetroBus schemes to be delivered over the next few years.
