27 000 cyclists to be left stranded by rail cock-up

One of the chief selling points of the wildly-popular 56-mile London to Brighton bike ride - this year held on 20th June - is the availability of special trains to whisk riders and bikes back to the Smoke. But the service will not be provided this year: South Central Trains has acquired new, bicycle-averse rolling stock and cyclists now face forking out £20 to pay for return travel by juggernaut. Event organiser, the British Heart Foundation, is having to provide coaches and lorries to make up for the loss of the special trains.

Ride participants who have to travel from Brighton to London to start the ride – which last raised nearly £2.5 million - will have to pay an extra £20.

Bike Week national co-ordinator Nick Harvey is shocked and is advising cyclists to choose other events:

"1500 cycling events will be run during Bike Week, of which the popular London to Brighton ride is just one. Any cycle owner who wants to raise money for charity by participating in a Bike Week event can avoid any hassle by choosing a local ride. For example, there will be many Bikeathon events to raise funds for Leukaemia Research, this year’s national charity partner for Bike Week."
