£30k here, £47k there: Did you apply for government cash to increase cycling?

BikeBiz.co.uk has banged on long and hard about the cash going begging from the Cycling Projects Fund. Did you apply for your slice? Details on the successful applicants have been announced today. Some bicycle businesses got cash, but not many. That left more money in the pot for businesses such The Third Space, a Soho gym. It got £6000 to provide secure parking for 40 bikes. A boat building business next to Hot Wheels in Poole got £10 000 for encouraging its employees to cycle to work. Hants bobbies got £50k, and a Lake District hire centre got £22k for cycle parking and a new workshop.

The Cycling Projects Fund cash is awarded by the Department of Transport. The DfT had £2.285m to dole out. There were 466 applications for grants, 155 of these were successful. Winning organisations include 54 schools, 15 hospitals, 18 private sector employers and a range of universities, voluntary groups and cycling organisations.

Perhaps many bicycle businesses did apply but were knocked back? Remember, Jim McGurn's Company of Cyclists got the best part of fifty grand in last year's scheme. There have been numerous stories on the Cycling Projects Fund on this site.

And if a boat builder can score ten grand, then surely a lot more bicycle businesses should have applied for the cash?

But, let's be positive, much of the £2.285m will be going straight into bike trade coffers as some of the money is for spending on fleet bikes, trailerbikes and cycling kit. Sheffield stand and street furniture companies will also do well, an awful lot of cash is being spent on storage and security projects.

Sadly, the government is not making the Cycling Projects Fund an annual cash jamboree (even though it costs about the same as painting 100 metres of white lines on to a dual carriageway) and instead is urging local authorities to initiate similar schemes for cycling using funds from their local Transport Settlement funding.

Announcing today's awards, Transport minister Kim Howells said:

"It is very encouraging to have received so many great ideas to increase cycling. This in itself should demonstrate to local authorities just how much unmet demand there currently is at local level for low cost cycling facilities. I believe that this financial boost will have a significant impact in encouraging more cycling, helping to ease local congestion and improve public health.

"I now expect local authorities to rise to the challenge. We have increased funding for small schemes through the Local Transport Plan process and I am keen to see this deliver a marked improvement in conditions for cyclists. I encourage local traffic authorities to pick up where we have begun through our Cycling Projects Fund and create funds of this type in their own areas."
