Mike Parker’s new book 'Mapping the Roads' charts the ambitions and hopes of the nation through maps.

"As much as we complain about congestions and potholes, where would we be without our roads?" asks author Mike Parker, whose previous books include 'Map Addict' and the follow up 'Wild Rover'.

He adds: "The story of Britain’s road development is also the story of its political, economic and social history."

Cars get a starring role in the book but the work of cyclists are featured too, not surprising given the boost that cyclists of the 1880s and 1890s gave to famous mapping companies such as Ordnance Survey, Bartholomew's and specialist companies such as Gall & Inglis.

Parker highlights the maps produced for the Ripley Road, in the 19th Century "the most famous cycling highway in the world."

The book is published by AA Publishing, is lavishly illustrated and costs £25.00.
