Marcus Agius, chairman of Barclays, launched the sponsorship of the Cycle Into Work scheme today. The scheme has been running for a number of years and will now be able to continue thanks to the corporate sponsorship.

Cycle Into Work "uses the power of cycling to help the homeless develop key skills to secure a job and a permanent home" said a statement from Bikeworks. Bikeworks was created in 2007 and was named Best Social Enterprise at the PWC Private Business Awards 2011 in September and has won many other awards too.

It promotes sustainable urban transport works on alleviating social deprivation in east London.

"We tackle environmental issues by getting more people cycling, and make cycling as green as possible by recycling used bikes for re-use whilst at the same time creating employment and training opportunities for disadvantaged communities," said Bikeworks.

Cycle into Work is a training and employment programme developed and piloted by Bikeworks. The programme delivers work-based vocational training placements and employment opportunities for homeless and ex-homeless people.

Participants have the opportunity to gain CyTech qualifications in bicycle maintenance.
