BCF nets four-year funding deal

Lottery distributor Sport England has rewarded high-achieving governing bodies by introducing four-year funding agreements.

Until now, all grants have been allocated on an annual basis.

However, Government-backed Sport England recognise that some sports have proved capable of managing a budget and deserve the opportunity to be able to plan for the long term.

Cycling is one such sport, as was demonstrated by Quelley and Co at the Sydney Olympics.

Sport England officials are keen to stress that performance is not just measured in delivering medals but also proof that performance plans can be produced in an effective way. The British Cycle Federation comes up trumps here too, because their World Class Performance Plan is seen as the one other UK sporting bodies should emulate.

The Sport England lottery panel now intends to increase liaison with individual performance directors, with each governing body having one central point of contact.

Funding for the world class programme will be considered together with Sport England's overall funding so the position of sport within the exchequer can be understood in a coherent way.
