£700,000 has been awarded to Belfast City Council for the creation of a public bicycle hire scheme, according to this Belfast Telegraph article.

This week Transport Minister Danny Kennedy announced the council will spend on 300 bikes and 30 docking stations as part of the 'Active Travel Demonstration Project' - which sounds uncannily similar to the cycling demonstration town project seen in the days of Cycling England.

The introduction of the bike hire scheme to Belfast is the latest in the growing trend. Dublinbikes has been running for three years (BikeBiz spoke to the man behind the scheme - Dublin Lord Mayor Andrew Montague - here). London's own Barclays Cycle Hire recently celebrated its second anniversary while other scheme including Newcastle's Scratchbikes and Brompton's railway station bike booths have launched.

There's further comment on the trend here.
