A County Dublin retailer has paid €10,000 damages to a two-year old girl after a bike fell in front of her inside the store, as reported in the Irish Examiner.

The child in question, Katie Campbell, suffered post-traumatic stress after the incident, where a bicycle crashed directly into her path from a 14-foot high shelf.

Campbell, now five years old, escaped physical injury at the incident, which took place in Smyths Toys shop in Airside Retail Park, Swords, Co Dublin. She was browsing the store with her father prior to the accident, in which the bike did not strike her.

Campbell’s GP referred her to a consultant child psychologist who found her to be suffering a post-traumatic reaction of a moderate type. The report said she showed signs of anxiety and suffered nightmares after the incident. The psychologist concluded she has regressed in her emotional, social and behavioural progression.

The €10,000 offer from Smyths Toys was approved by Judge Deery at the Circuit Civil Court.
