Bike leaves Brum

Haymarket's The Bike Show will not be staged at the NEC, Birmingham, in 2005. The April event, promoted by Future's MBUK, Cycling Plus and What MTB, moves to Stoneleigh Park, near Coventry, home to shows such as the Dirt Rider Expo. The move is to create more bums-on-saddles events, similar to Interbike's Outdoor Demo days. Other UK and international shows are hoping to add on bike testing areas...

Acquired from Future Publishing by Haymarket Exhibitions in 2001, The Bike Show has been held at the National Exhibition Centre since 1996, having started life at London Olympia.

Dave Buckinger of On Yer Bike in Mansfield once planned to stage a bicycle trade and consumer show at Stoneleigh Park but it never got off the ground.

Haymarket is hoping the 30 000 visitors it gets at the NEC will migrate to Stoneleigh Park, 1-3rd April, because of its much greater potential for on-site bike test courses. There's already a 4-Cross course at Stoneleigh.

Friedrichshafen's Eurobike is also rumoured to be planning on staging a bike test day in advance of the trade show, although no details have yet been announced.

Interbike's trade-only OutdoorDemo days - held in the sunny Nevada desert, 45 minutes from Las Vegas - are seen as an experiential element many show organisers would like to add to their shows.

Even David Hyde is planning to tag on such an element: he has sent letters to potential exhibitors advising of the plan to add pay-to-play, public days at his hitherto trade-only Spring road shows at Harrogate and Sandown.
