Bike-friendly Rogers rails against Realpolitik

Architect Lord Richard Rogers has this week called on the government not to water down any of his proposals on urban regeneration made in his capacity as the chairman of the government-appointed Urban Task Force.

There are fears that, in a forthcoming white paper on urban planning, the Treasury will want to rein Rogers back because his ideas on reviving urban areas include plans to restrict the use of cars and increase the use of public transport, walking and cycling. Such plans would be expensive to implement and potentially unpopular with a car-fixated public.

In a submission to the Commons Environment , Transport & Regions Select Commitee, Rogers said: We now have the best opportunity for over 200 years to produce an urban renaissance in England. Three main drivers the technological revolution, the gloabl ecological threat and a social transformation that flows from increased life-expectancy and new lifestyle choice are creating a climate for urban renewal.
