Dumfries and Galloway is to play host to the Original Bicycle Festival, between Saturday May 9th and Sunday May 24th.

Record-breaking cyclist Mark Beaumont helped launch the event - touted as a homecoming for bikes due to the regions claim to be the ‘birthplace’ of the pedal cycle, according to BBC Scotland.

Blacksmith Kirkpatrick Macmillan was declared to have invented the pedal-driven bicycle in the late 1830’s while living in the Dumfries area.

The 16-day festival will include a range of activity incorporating MTB and road cycling, coaching sessions, rallies, cultural and educational events and youth and women-centric activities.

The organisers behind the Original Bicycle Festival said that the event was partly inspired by the World Mountain Bike Conference (www.worldmountainbikeconference.com) – taking place May 12th – May 15th near Dumfries.

The Original Bicycle Festival is listed on BikeBiz's regularly updated events guide.
