Blair wants kids to have outdoor fun

The government is to seed fund a network of adventure centres so inner-city children can ramble and ride
Publish date:

At todays Labour Party conference, Culture Secretary Chris Smith said the government was to set up a network of outdoor recreation centres called John Smith Centres in honour of the late Labour Leader who was a keen rambler - funded from the National Lottery's New Opportunities Fund.

"Far too many children from our inner-cities never have the chance to get out into the open countryside and mountain landscapes and fresh air that others take for granted, never get the opportunity to go walking or cycling or canoeing or climbing, said Chris Smith, who was the government representative at the official opening of the National Cycle Network in Birmingham in June.

Chris Smith told the conference that said John Smith was passionate about wanting to ensure no-one was denied the chance to enjoy the outdoors.

"He would have longed to see us giving the children the opportunity to reach out beyond the concrete confines of towns and cities," said the Culture Secretary.
