The London Cycle Challenge is returning this year, aiming to inspire Londoners to get onto their bikes over the summer.

The Transport for London-run event will take place between June 18th and July 15th and is free to enter, with online team registration open to those who live, work or study in the capital, at www.tfl.gov.uk/cyclechallenge.

Participants will cycle as many miles as possible. Miles mean prizes in the Cycle Challenge, with cycling goodies for small, medium and large teams. Schools can also get involved in the challenge, which will be using social networking to spread the word via the London Challenge 2011 Facebook group.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “Bragging rights are at stake for teams of cyclists all over the capital but the Cycle Challenge is also a great way for new cyclists to join forces and give it a go.

“Summer is the perfect time of year for people to step up the amount of time they spend on two wheels and the Cycle Challenge is an ideal motivation to do so.”

Ben Plowden, TfL’s director of better routes and places, added: “Last year more than 10,000 Lon doners cycled more than 17,000,000 miles during the Challenge. “If you want to get involved, but are not a regular cyclist, there is plenty of support available including TfL supported cycle training and a series of cycle guides which will help get you started and find your way around London."
