British Cycling nominated for Sports Governing Body of the Year

British Cycling has been nominated for the Governing Body of the Year in the 2015 Sports Industry Awards.

British Cycling lists the following achievements from 2014:

"The number of adults cycling once a week in England is booming with 2.1 million adults now riding their bikes at least once a week. British Cycling supported seven major international events in 2014, with the Tour de France, the Tour of Britain, the inaugural Women’s Tour and World Cups in Track, BMX, Cyclo-cross and Para-cycling all providing inspiration to participation. Throughout 2014, the Great Britain Cycling Team won 14 World Championship titles, 20 World Cups or World Series titles and nine Commonwealth gold medals. British Cycling’s membership surpassed 100,000 for the first time in the organisation’s history -having doubled since London 2012."

A statement from the body said: "Our manifesto to transform Great Britain into a true cycling nation."

British Cycling’s chief executive, Ian Drake, said:

“There can be no doubt that 2014 was another hugely successful year for British Cycling.

“It is clear from the major events that took place in this country in 2014, that British Cycling is capable of not only nurturing world champions but also excels in using flagship events to drive massive increases in participation and engagement.

“Sport England’s recent Active People report prove that our efforts to increase the number of people riding their bikes are working, while our membership continues to grow, surpassing 100,000 in 2014 for the first time in the organisation’s history. Off the bike, our campaign to transform Great Britain into a true cycling nation is continuing to influence government policy at the highest level.

“I am delighted to see that cycling initiatives and events have been recognised elsewhere within the Sports Industry Awards, with nominations for Prudential RideLondon in the Participation Event of the Year category and the much-respected BMX Legacy Programme in the Community Event of the Year."
