Bulletin boarding for beginners

Here's how and why to use our snazzy new BBS...
Publish date:

Brant Richards is the only outsider to have used our bulletin board so far. He's an old hand at bulletin boards such as urbancyclist and many others (including a curry one he set up himself!) but perhaps it's a new concept for many people, including net newcomers. If that's the case for you here's what a bulletin board is and how to use one.

When you send an email it goes to a specified address and nobody else (unless you choose to broadcast to a wider named list). When you email to a bulletin board, your message is seen by everybody on the bulletin board. This means you can put your point of view across or start a new 'thread' by coming up with a statement of your own. BBS can be very useful for asking questions to a broad readership. Say, for instance, you have looked everywhere for a particular ancient bike part but to no avail you could ask if anybody on the website knew where to find one.

There are always a whole host of experts 'lurking' on bulletin boards and you can get some extremely advanced answers to the simplest of questions. If you ask something general your question can lead to a long thread of answers-followed-by-answers.

Unlike a chat room - which is live - a bulletin board is constantly archived so you can follow all the threads from the start, or you can just join at the last thread.

As far as we can tell this is the first bike-trade specific bulletin board in the world. It's largely out of our control, so make it your own.

NOTE: offensive comments and swearing will be either deleted by the moderator or stopped by an automatic expletive deflector.
