Burley bought but with job and product chops

An Oregon businessman has bought the Eugene, Oregon, maker of bicycle trailers, tandems and recumbents. 104 staff were laid off on Friday and 65 will return on Monday, working for Michael Coughlin. He is to mothball the bikes in favour of the company's distinctive blue-and-yellow trailers.

Burley Chief Executive Char Ellingsworth released a statement about the sale: "This wasn't an easy decision to make, but it is the clearest direction for Burley and offers the best chance at success."

Burley sells about 27,000 trailers a year. Starting from Monday morning, Burley will cease its production of steel-framed tandems, recumbents and road bikes.

Ellingsworth told The Eugene Register-Guard:

"If you pay down some debts, put some cash in the business, get back in the good graces of your suppliers, you can make trailers and continue to grow the business.

Burley was formerly a workers' co-operative but recently converted to a privately held corporation following three consecutive years of losses.
