'Cadel Effect' helps BMC shift team replica bikes in Oz

Predictably, Cadel Evans's victory in this year's Tour de France is making tills ring in Australian bike shops
Publish date:

Three weeks after Cadel Evans won the Tour de France on a BMC bikes, Australian bicycle retailers have sold out of many high-end road bikes as demand for bicycles and accessories soars.

According to The Age newspaper, BMC Australia's distributor, Echelon Sports, has already sold out of replica kit, and won't be able to meet demand for yellow-themed BMC replica bikes.

BMC Australia brand manager Rob Rixon said only 140 or so limited edition signed yellow replicas of the bicycle Evans rode down the Champs-Elysees were being made and already many had been pre-sold, despite costing 18,000 Australian dollars each. 14 have been bought already and they haven't even left the production line.

BMC is a Swiss brand of bicycle.

Rixon said BMC Australia had sold more bikes in the past three weeks than it had in the previous three months.

Bike shops are also seeing a boom in non-road bike sales.

Gordon Lawrence, of Lawrencia Cycles in Hawthorn, said bicycle and accessory sales since the win had risen by 20 per cent:

"People who were thinking about buying a bike in the next three to six months have come in and said they want it now."
