Cannondale introduced its 30mm spindle in 2000. The standard BB spindle diameter is 24mm.
A fatter spindle "externalizes crankset bearings to gain a stiffer pedalling system," said a Cannondale press release at today's launch of the BB30 standard. This was held away from the Cannondale show booth because the new standard is "neutral", said Cannondale Europe president Jeff McGuane.
Chris Peck, Cannondale VP of R&D said: "As an industry, we work with a number of constraints that can stifle innovation. By offering our BB30 as a free international standard, both frame and component companies can offer consumers more choice and better performance. For example, Specialized has adopted our standard for their F.A.C.T. crankset."
