Cars loss is bikes gain – to the tune of 3.3 million

Survey reveals commuter cycling is up, while motor traffic has decreased significantly for first time since early 1970s
Publish date:

A survey from Sainsbury’s Home Insurance has revealed that the number of commuters turning to cycling has hit a high of 3.3 million, according to Bike Radar.

The survey results come shortly after new statistics from the Department for Transport, announcing that traffic on the road is seeing notable decreases for the first time in almost 40 years.

For the first time there were fewer cars and lorries on the road in Britain (in the six months to September last year) than there were in the same period in 2007 - contradicting predictions of an annual one to two per cent increase in motor traffic. A fall similar to this has not been seen since the early 1970s.

Those figures have been backed up by reports that new car sales have slipped by 23 per cent and are at their lowest point since 1996.
