According to a study from Dutch academics, the health benefits of cycling outweigh the potential risks, as reported on Road.cc.

People switching to daily use of bicycle instead of using cars saw substantial health benefits, increasing life expectancy by three to 15 months. The gain was weighed against 0.8 to 40 days lost due to air pollution exposed to (while cycling), and the five to nine days lost due to road traffic pollution.

The scientific paper judged that: “on average, the estimated health benefits of cycling were substantially larger than the risks relative to car driving for individuals shifting mode of transport.”

Researchers made the findings following study of air pollution literature, stats on road traffic accidents and physical activity.

The findings were made by the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and are set to be published in the Environmental Health Perspectives academic journal.
