Cycle projects in line for £30k Eurostar Sustainable Travel Award

Two UK cycle ventures will be pitted against French and Belgian schemes tomorrow
Publish date:

Cycle Cambridge, Cycle Exeter, Ghent City Council’s cycle scheme and Octopus Plan have been selected as finalists for the inaugural Eurostar Ashden Award for Sustainable Travel.

The winner will be entitled to a share of £30,000 in prize money and will find out if they’ve been successful tomorrow (Wednesday May 30th). Over 120 organisations for the UK, France and Belgium registered interest in the category.

The Ashden awards were founded in 2001 to encourage the use of local sustainable energy and this is the first time Eurostar has partnered with the organisation. UK finalists include Cycle Cambridge which has been recognised for prioritising cycling, and combining large extensions to the cycling network with innovative promo activities. These projects and others have helped cement Cambridge’s position as the city with the highest percentage mode share of cycling in the UK.

Meanwhile Cycle Exeter has seen 50km of new and improved cycle lanes built since 2005, helping inspire youngsters to get on their bikes and employees encouraged to cycle to work. The city’s cycle mode share is three times the national average, despite building a cycle culture ‘from scratch’.
