Cycle Rail Award nominations now open

Now in its tenth year, ceremony will gong those making efforts to bring about integrated travel solutions

Nominations for the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) 2014 National Cycle Rail Awards are now open and castable here.

The rail industry has been working with the Government to encourage more passengers to make journeys combining a bicycle and the train. Last year, a record 39.1million cycle-rail journeys were made, up from 25.2m in 2008. This is due to a joint programme of investment, totalling nearly £30m, which will fund the creation of over 45,500 new cycle spaces at stations by the end of 2015.

The awards recognise outstanding schemes, projects, cycling groups and individuals that have improved or encouraged greater use of combined cycle and rail travel. There are 10 categories, including a photography competition open to all, where members of the public can win one of two £300 GoPro helmet cameras. The Awards are free to enter, though entrants are encouraged to consider a donation to the Railway Children charity.

“ATOC, its members and their industry partners are committed to increasing and improving cycle access to the railway. Cycle-Rail is presently the single largest generator of new cycle journeys in the UK with an increase of 14 million trips a year since 2010," said Conrad Haigh, ATOC’s Head of Integrated Transport.

“With around £30m of improvements recently completed or underway at over 315 stations across the country, I expect there to be some very interesting entries and stiff competition this year."

Supported by the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group and all members of the UK Cycling Alliance, the awards will be held in Westminster on November 26th and will be attended by parliamentarians and key players from the cycle and rail industries.

Entries and nominations can be made using the online application form, or by downloading a pdf form at

The Cycle-Rail Awards close for entries and nominations Friday 12 September 2014 at 17:00.
