The Bristol-based charity that gets people back on bikes has this week changed to a more mainstream name to reflect what the director calls its "growing influence on national policy and practice."

“Life Cycle UK works directly with people, helping them to start, or to return to, cycling," said Peter Andrews, director of the five year old charity.

"It inspires and enthuses people about cycling as an exciting form of transport, as an easy way to keep fit, or as a way of helping the environment. And, as well as raising awareness of cycling’s possibilities, it provides practical help and support.”

Among other initiatives, the charity runs a 'cycling on prescription' project in partnership with the NHS, and works with disadvantaged communities to promote cycling for everyday travel.

It has produced a comprehensive Cycle Friendly Employers’ Guide. Life Cycle UK also runs cycle training courses and worked with the CTC to create the recently-launched national standards for adult cycle training.

TV bike boffin Adam Hart-Davis is one of Life Cycle UK’s patrons and he welcomed the name change:

“I have been with Life Cycle UK since the charity began as Cycle West nearly five years ago. I am delighted that they are making cycling easier in all sorts of ways, working with schools, communities, businesses, and the healthcare sector. The charity’s work is inventive and effective and, because of it, I see the possibilities of a bright future for cycling throughout the country.”
