Cycling Dot TV sends terrabytes of data to America

The British-based internet-delivered TV station had 33 000+ viewers over the weekend of February 26th and 27th as the European road race season got under way with the opening of the Belgian classics season. There were three times more Americans watching than Brits and they saw US rider George Hincapie of Lance Armstrong's Discovery Channel team win the Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne one day semi-classic.

Cycling.tv now has logged-in viewers from 90 countries but the bulk are from the US.

Simon Brydon, Cycling.tv's managing director said: "Having free to access live coverage of Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne and then pleasing the majority of your audience with an American winning just shows our commitment to customer experience!"

Cycling.tv's bandwidth usage is sky-high.

"It's too hideous to even contemplate the terrabytes," Brydon told BikeBiz.com. [Warning:web-tech quote downloading now...]

"But we were able to sustain all our users, but we did drop the data rate on our top encode from 800 kbs to 400 kbs to ensure this for a time on Sunday afternoon. [Resuming normal service...] Our users said they couldn't give a monkies, just keep it coming."

The 33 000 viewers attracted to Cycling.tv over the weekend of February 26-27th would have been higher but content was blocked to viewers in Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Holland and

Norway because of "copyright already having been sold to a local broadcaster," said Brydon.
