The Dales Bike Centre picked up an award for its ecologically-sound facilities last week.

At the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s best Building Design Awards 2010, the Dales Bike Centre won the ‘Energy Sustainability’ prize. Judges were impressed by the Centre’s ground source heating system, water recycling bike wash, heat exchange ventilation system and Bio disc mini treatment plant. Other environmentally-friendly features of the building include the doubling up of loft insulation, energy saving lighting and double glazed windows and doors.

Stuart and Brenda Price opened the Dales Bike Centre in January 2009. Designed especially for cyclists, it includes 14 bed accommodation, bike shop and café. Other bike-centric facilities include a secure bike store, drying room, laundry and 24 hour cake access.

Stuart Price enthused: “It took us two and half years to get planning permission for the bike centre from the National Park. It’s great to get this award and the recognition from the Yorkshire Dales National Park for the efforts we went to designing and building Dales Bike Centre. Since we opened the support we’ve received from the mountain bike community has been ace and we’re looking forward to another great year next year.”

The Centre also scored a prize for its green practices at last year's Yorkshire Post Awards.
