The French sporting goods giant continues to grow its shop portfolio in Britain

Decathlon goes to Coventry

October will see the 13th Decathlon store in the UK open its doors on these shores, according to this story in the Coventry Telegraph.

Taking a unit at the town’s new Arena Park shopping centre, the retailer missed out on opening in time for visitors coming to Coventry’s Ricoh Arena for the Olympics. Bad weather was to blame for the delayed construction, said the report.

Decathlon Coventry store manager Ashley Wright said: “We are really excited about the new store and can’t wait to get into it now and get stuck in.

“It is a good, prominent location and also great for a city like Coventry that needs good retailers. It is a shame we won’t get to open until October now so we miss the summer sports events at the Ricoh but we are still looking forward to it.

“There is a strong sporting scene in Coventry with road cycling, running, cricket across Warwickshire, and there are so many sports in the region we are looking forward to supporting.

“What makes us different from our competitors is that we do get involved with sports in the area and focus on the local community so we are looking forward to working with some of the local clubs and associations too.”

The firm last year revealed it was planning to increase its presence in Britain to 100 stores (just 87 to go). Decathlon owner Oxylane had a good 2011, reporting global sales and turnover growth.
