December sees online sales rise

Internet shopping up 14.2 per cent last month ; But growth in shopping on the web slows for first time in seven years
Publish date:

UK shoppers spent over £4.67 billion online in December – the equivalent of £76.67 for every person in the UK, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.

Capgemini’s research said that consumers were turning online in a bid to beat the credit crunch, reported the Retail Bulletin.

But it wasn’t all good news for the online sector – growth slowed for the first time in December since the end of 2002 and the public spent 1.5 per cent less than they did in November. The fall in growth is attributed to online retail's performance in November - which saw record highs.

Approximately one third of shoppers (37 per cent) did more than half of their shopping online, with almost two-thirds (59.9 per cent) splashing more cash online than they did last year for Christmas.
