Disc brake designer wins £1000 award

Product design engineering graduate Michael McNiven now working as a mechanic at Dales Cycles of Glasgow has won the Smallpiece Trust Travel Award for his design of an MTB disc brake. He wants to use the grant to travel to the US to visit Cannondale, Specialized and Burley. He also wants a design job either here or in the States but bike companies arent replying to his letters
Publish date:

Michael McNiven, 33, recently graduated from the University of Strathclyde. The universitys commercialisation officer has advised McNiven to spend another few months perfecting his disc brake and then sell the design to a disc brake manufacturer.

McNiven has sent a CV and covering letter to Hope in the UK and Avid in the States but, to date, McNiven says he has received no replies despite mentioning his innovative disc brake design.

This is a cable operated disc brake where both pads move into the rotor, increasing the force possible, says McNiven, who told bikebiz.co.uk that is design is easier to strip down than current brakes on the market and is easier to set up too.

The Smallpiece Trust Travel Award is one of the awards in the RSA Student Design Awards run by the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce, first run in 1924.
